About
StriperSurf High - Low Bait Rigs™ can be used in both fresh and saltwater, from boats, shoreline, surf, jetties, piers and docks. We have have used these rigs in Atlantic waters from Canada to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Coast from Washington to Southern Califonia. Since we lived in Europe for twelve years I used them in the Adriatic, Mediterranean, English Channel and North Sea.
In freshwater the StriperSurf High Low Bait Rig™ has been used with chunked bait and livelined shad in numerous lakes and reservoirs; Cumberland, Kentucky, Santee, Granbury, Texoma, Toledo Bend, Smith Mountain, Raystown, West Point, Percy Priest and Lake Hopatcong. In the mid-70's while everyone was aimlessly jigging bucktails on Lake Texoma, I was boating stripers and largemouth bass on each trip. In Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake I caught and released my biggest largemouth bass in March of 1996, 7 pounds 4 ounces!
All StriperSurf Bait Rigs conform to International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) international angling rules (PDF) for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Join the IGFA.
Types Available
Saltwater High - Low Bait Rigs: Measure ±48 inches in length and were originally designed for surf fishing.
Tournament Trophy™ Saltwater High - Low Bait Rigs: Incorporate offshore fishing technology of coil spring line protectors and swaged sleeve assembly of the barrel swivels to withstand the higher tensile pressure from both casting and true trophy sized fish. They measure ±48 inches in length. Used by Team StriperSurf, the 2005 “Beating on the Beach” Tournament Champions.
"BJPF" High - Low Bait Rigs: An acronym for Boat, Jetty, Pier and Freshwater. It measures ±36 inches in length and can be used for drifting or anchored up in a boat, on a jetty, pier or any freshwater application.
Weights and Sinkers: Use the correct type of weight for your fishing situation. For saltwater surf fishing where currents are present a Pyramid, Sputnik or Hatteras weight is required. For drift or anchored up in a boat, jetties, piers, docks and most freshwater fishing use Bank, Walking or Drop Casting sinkers (aka Bass Casting sinker).
Livelining: These rigs can be used for livelining baitfish but are not suitable for use with live eels.
Trolling: In fresh or saltwater use the 48" long Saltwater High - Low Bait Rig. Attach a sliding Egg sinker or Bank sinker with a sinker slide to your main line. Tie your main line directly to the rig's top barrel swivel. On the end with the DuoLock snap attach a Bucktail or lead headed, soft body jig. This holds the end down and acts as stinger hook. Same set up with downriggers, planner boards, wire or lead core line except eliminate the sliding Egg or Bank sinker.
Components & Specifications
Saltwater High - Low Bait Rigs are tied with 60 or 80 pound test clear Momoi® Hi-Catch monofilament (line weight varies due to hook size selection). I tie the Dropper Loops "short," as small as possible, to maintain the casting ability of this rig. I use Gamakatsu® Octopus, Baitholder and Octopus Circle hooks because they are extremely sharp and do not require additional manual sharpening. Hooks are NS Black or Red plated. Black 150 pound test StriperSurf Trophy™ Barrel Swivels are attached to each end. A 150 pound (1-½") DuoLock snap is attached to the bottom swivel for the weight.
Tournament Trophy™ Saltwater High - Low Bait Rig version is made with your choice of Gamakatsu® hooks on 80 pound test clear Momoi® Hi-Catch monofilament, top and bottom black 150 pound test StriperSurf Trophy™ Barrel Swivels swaged on with the world's strongest sleeves, Momoi Hi-Catch® Silver Loks. The terminal ends are designed for maximum shock, pull, chafing protection and quick changeover by a unique fabrication of offshore components. These include a Jinkai® Spring Loop Line Protector through the eye of the top and bottom barrel swivels. A 150 pound (1-½") Rosco® DuoLock snap is attached to the bottom swivel for the weight.
"BJPF" High Low Bait Rig is also tied with 60 pound test clear Momoi® Hi-Catch monofilament and Gamakatsu hooks. Overall length is ±36". A black 150 pound test StriperSurf Trophy™ Barrel Swivel is attached to the top of the rig and 100 pound test Rosco® swivel to the bottom. A black 150 pound (1-½") DuoLock snap is attached to the bottom swivel for the weight.
Packaging: Each rig is coiled, tied, and packed in a heavy duty (4mm) resealable clear plastic pouch with instructions. Depending upon size, orders are packed in a Tyvek® envelope, bubble padded mailer or boxed.
Recommended Hook Types and Sizes
The type and size of the hook is dependent on the type of fishing and the species of fish you will be targeting.
Circle hooks perform best when fishing from a boat. They also work well from a fixed position such as the surf or a jetty but their use does not mean you can ignore your rod and assume the Circle hook will "automatically hook" a fish.
Octopus and Baitholder hooks: The choice between these "J" type hooks is dependent on your bait. Baitholders are ideal for small baits such as clams, crabs, squid and worms. Octopus hooks are good for large chunks.
Hook Plating (Color): All hooks have NS Black plating. Occasionally, we may supply hooks with Red plating. There is really nothing special about red since it is the first color of the spectrum to disappear underwater. Anything you may read about red hooks is just marketing hype.
Hook Sizes: Most people use smaller hooks than they should. The following are the basic recommended sizes for Striped Bass, Drum and Bluefish.
